2D Witch Hat
1. New Image, white, set up like below.
2. Path tool, Spline, 2D Object, black, draw a curved, pointed shape roughly 244x281 px. for the top part of your hat.
Click on Path Edit and create the shape below. No need to be perfect on the top part as any imperfections will only lend to the spookyness of your hat. You may curve it forward or back, your choice. The bottom of your hat does need to be like the captures below to fit with the other parts of your hat though. :)
3. Path tool, Oval, 2D Object, black, draw a large oval 349x109 px.
4. Transform tool, Rotate Freely, turn this piece up on the right side even with the bottom of your witch's top part.
5. Click on Path Edit, Non-free edit mode, and follow the captures below as best you can.
Click on the Plus sign in the Edit menu above and add 2 nodes.
6. Grab the right node you just added, and bring it up close to the top line of the oval.
Grab your other node, and do the same at that end.
Grab the center node and bring up a bit and to the left a little to create this shape below. Edit your shape for smooth lines if you need to. Again, no need to be totally perfect here as we will fill in the ends with shapes. :) Don't forget to save this as a ufo!
7. Zoom in to 200 or more, and with your Path tool, Spline, trace the line of the left end of the hat just inside the shape like so. Path Edit to make this line smooth all around as much as possible, and make this shape.
8. Do the same thing to the front end creating this fatter shape for the brim of your hat. Bring your line almost even with the top of the hat shown here on the left of the capture.
9. Path Edit this shape so it looks similar to this shape below.
10. Save with a new name "2D witches hat". That's right, 2D because this is your 2D template. Leave open on your workspace.
3D Witch Hat
1. Now Save As 3D witch hat. Select your top hat, and apply my black preset. Path Edit if you need to so the grey streak is similar to this one. Go back up and check with the capture in the beginning of the tut if you need to to get this worked out.
11. Select the brim (long piece) of your hat and use the preset.
This piece goes under your top hat object.
12. Select your back end piece and apply the preset or change to 3D Round.
13. Select your front end piece and apply the preset or change to 3D Round. Make sure all your pieces touch and fit well together or re-edit until they do. You should now have this, minus my witch face. Your object layers should be hat at the top, long brim under that, and the two short end pieces under those in any order.
You may change the lighting on any two lights in the Panel for the front end piece as I have done here. Your 3D hat is finished. Do not merge as you may want to put a face under that nice new brim you made.
If you like this silly witch's face you may download her here.
2D Witch Hat
1. Open your 2D witches hat you saved to your drive.
2. Select the Paint brush 5-0-100, Erie Green #00FF00.
Select the top hat part, and go to Effect, Creative, POE around the outside. What ever version of PI you are using do the POE thing. :) Everyone knows where that is that can do this tut. :)
Select each of the other parts, and do the same.
Add your witches face under the second object down or the main brim or not, and save as 2D witch hat. Your witches are finished.
I hope you have enjoyed this double tutorial!
