Description: Learn how to create a Kewl pumpkin coach for Halloween.
This is a very long tutorial making lots of pieces and parts. Make sure you have the time to work on it - it will prolly take a week. LOL
Images have been reduced for faster loading pages.
Unzip the preset parts file to your Presets folder. You can make a separate folder for the shape and velvet textures if you like and put the two outline presets in your presets folder.
COACH WHEEL
1. New Image, white, 300 X 300
2. Path tool, Circle, 3D Round, Green. Draw a Circle almost the size of your canvas and use my Wheel 3D Pipe preset on it.
3. Change to the Line & Arrow tool, line size 4 (same size as your wheel line. Draw a curled line like below.
Use my "Wheel Center 3D Line preset" on this line. Edit the line until it looks similar to this one below.
4. When you have your line the way you want it, Rclick, Convert your line from a path to image.
Select your Blur tool and blur the upper end of your curled line where it goes over your outside circle. This may take a time or two till you get it so it blends in well and looks like it's 'growing' from the outside wheel in.
5. Choose the Path tool again, change 3D Pipe to 3D Round, same green, and draw a small oval or round shape (which ever fits your center best) for the center of your wheel.
Move it under your lines to the bottom object.
6. Open the material box above and slide the Bevel, Width lever as far to the right as it will go. We want a nice round bevel on our oval or round.
Line up the outer edges so they are even with each other.
7. Blur tool, default settings, blur the very end of the line.
8. Now touch it with the Dodge tool just once (1 click) on the default settings on the end of the line. That's the end of the line all right. Select all parts, group, Save! Put aside for now or close.
COACH
1. Open a new white image 500 x 500 px.
Open my shape provided, center it, Duplicate it, flip it upside down, and butt it up against the top one so they fit together as one piece. Merge as one object. Notice there is a 2 px darker orange Border around this piece. Butt border to border.
Resize to 177 x 432 px if you need to. Center both ways again.
2. Go to Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee and accept the defaults.
Delete the original and Edit Smooth the edges if this one needs it.
3. Use shape B25 to create another curved strip making it approxamately the same length as your first piece.
Edit this line so the inner curve fits the outer curve on your center oval piece like so.
4. Duplicate this shape and move it outside of your 2nd shape.
Edit it so it fits this inner piece.
5. Select the last two pieces, Duplicate them, and move them to the left side, flip horizontally, and butt them up against the outside of your center pumpkin piece. Fool around fitting them if you need to to make them look smooth. You should have a similar shape to this below. Whoa! Look what you did! Awesome! :) Be Proud!
INSIDE COACH
1. Duplicate the center piece.
Lock your Resize (Aspect Ratio) dimensions so you resize both dimensions at the same time and make this piece 157 x 395 px or so it fits nicely inside the original piece with a little room on the sides.
2. With the Path tool and the same orange with the Border line create a little sliver like so below. Duplicate it, flip it upside down and move it into place to fit the bottom for a 3D look to the pumpkin shell. These two pieces make the pumpkin seem to have a thickness to the outer shell or skin.
3. Line & arrow tool, Spline, 2D, Color #9C0000, make two lines so it looks like the coach has a side and back to it like so. The short line is 3 px, the longer is 5 px wide. Start past the edge of the doorway on both and end that way on the longest. Then Convert your lines, and erase what extends past the doorway's edge exposing the 2 px border on the doorway.
4. Add a Shadow to each line.
5. Rclick, Split both shadows from the lines, and erase what extends beyond the dark orange 'border' edge of the doorway - like you did on the lines. Do not erase inside past the "dark orange border" edge or it may show up like a sore thumb. There is no way to hide it on this side.
Nothing can extend past the dark orange border on the outside either. Use the rope or the eraser or what ever tool you want to make this happen. If you use the eraser change the soft edge to 1 or 0 for clean erasing.
SEAT
1. New white Image 400 x 300 px.
2. Path, Spline, 2D, any color, no border, draw a shape as close to this as you can. This is the seat back. The right side and top is what will be seen so make that as close as you can to the template I show here.
NOTE: You may save this sample below and Edit, Trace edges to save a bit of time. Size is not real important here as you will need to make a row of these and then reduce.
Actual Size
3. Change the Mode to 3D. Open the Material Box and on the Bevel tab check the Spine setting below the settings. The width is now 99 and the depth is 30.
On the Shading tab, the Shininess setting raise to 100, and the Strength to 15.
In the preset preview window move the light source to slightly above the center of the preset like so. (X marks the spot. :)
4. For the seat make a 3D oval and bring the front end up and out a bit like so. This is actual size.
Actual Size
5. If you wish to change the color or use a preset now is the time to do it. Keep in mind that the inside of the coach is crushed orange or red velvet. You may color this to some other color if you like also, but you will have to adjust all the colors from here on throughout the tut to match or contrast with the color you have chosen here.
Line the seat up with the seat back like you see above if you haven't already.
Select both pieces and group.
Duplicate, move to the left a bit and up one (1) pixel, do this again and again 5 times until you have 6 pieces of seat cushion. Move each over a way and up 1 pixel.
Select all, Group, Rclick, Aligh, Space Evenly, Horizontally. Test, if spaced evenly - OK. Sweet! Don't you love that command!!! :)

6. Save this as your seat template and give this another name. You never know but what you will want to change the look of this later on or before you're done with this even, and wish you had saved it before merging. The first time I made this boy I wish I had! Duh on me at this point! LOL
Rclick, Merge as Single Object. Resize, Dimensions locked 219 x 194 or there abouts
NOTE: If for some reason you have changed your "inside" oval to an image and can not make a selection of it do the Edit, Trace thing and move it down to where your other one is. Delete the old one and then Duplicate it and turn it to a selection.
NOW you will be working with your oval selection on for some parts. If for some reason you can not work with your selection on in your version then you will need to duplicate the oval and change it to a selection for those commands below that are marked. Don't forget to be on the proper object or on the background for the right thing to happen that is called for in that step. I usually tell you. :)
7. Slide this piece over to your coach image.
Select your coach doorway oval (see step 11 if you do not know what this piece is).
Duplicate it, Change to the Path tool, and turn this oval to a selection using the Mode Options in the menu above. Rclick, Invert your selection.
8. Select the seat object, which extends all over the place at this point, and hit delete.
Add a Shadow like so below.
Rclick, Split it; Select it, and hit the delete key once.
9. Path, 2D, rounded rectangle, no border, any color, narrow about 100 x 15, (long enough to run past the oval selection on each side). Make one and move it so it's under the seat.
10. Turn on the Resize tool, Slant, and move the right side up a bit so it's parallel with the bottom of the seat like so below.
Convert from path to image and hit Delete once.
11. Add your shadow the same one as before - centered, bottom #'s 30-100-10. Split it, Select it, and hit the Delete key once.
12. Rclick over the selection on your image and choose None!
Select the bar again, and use the bucket fill, Image tab to select the orange or red crushed velvet and apply it to the bar.
Grab the two 3D pieces you added to make the pumpkin look 3D and bring them to the top object.
You've gone as far as you can inside for now. Save.
