Title: (Animated Stomp Optional) Baby Elephant Tag
Skill Level: Beginner

Featured Tools: Path Tool, Path Edit, Transform Tools, Text Tool, Zoom, Grid.

Additional Files:
My white preset

Description: This is an animated name tag. She stomps for a number of reasons...happiness, excitement and/or frustration! You may choose to not animate her also. :)

Unzip and Import my white preset to your Easy Pallet.

Background

Open a New White Image 300x300. You may want another light color for your background, If you want to, change the color to a light pink or orchid, etc...not any shade of gray as the shading on your elephant will be gray, also. I found the white acceptable.

Ears

Step 1. Click on the Path tool set for oval and draw a 3D oval 85x130 pixels long. Double click on my white preset.

Step 2. Click on the Transform tool and rotate left 40° like so:

Step 3. Duplicate and Flip Horizontally and move over like so:

Step 4. Save your file as a .ufo now.

Step 5. R-click on one object in the Layer Manager, Select all, Merge as Single Object. After this step, save it again by adding a 1 to the end of the 'name', so if you ever want one of a different color you don't have to remake the whole elephant over again!

Step 6. Click on the Blur tool set like this:

Step 7. Smooth the merge line a bit and the points that appeared on the right ear like so:

Step 8. R-click on your object, select Align, Center Horizontal. Deselect your object by clicking on the Layer Manager off the object or by hitting your Enter key or clicking on your background image outside of the object.

Head

Step 1. Click on the Path tool and set for circle. Draw a circle 75x75. R-click Align, Center Horizontally. Move into place between the ears just below the tops of her ears like so:

Body

Step 1. Draw another circle 140x140, R-click, Align, Center Horizontally.
Move it up or down depending on where you want it to be. Now, if you move it lower, it will look like her head is up. If you move it higher it will look like her head is straight or downward. About halfway down her head is good.

Step 2. Click on View, Guides and Grid, Grid, and Zoom up to 200 or 300 to make it easier to work on.

Step 3. While the body is still selected, click on the edit button. Move the center line up a bit.

Step 4. Click on the + sign and add two nodes to each leg at the bottom directly across from each other. And another node beside the one you just moved up. Try to get the bottom nodes straight across from each other as best you can.

Step 5. Pull all 4 bottom (foot) nodes down 2 lines to straighten the legs. Straighten the 4 bottom nodes so they are straight across from each other on each leg, and make the line between the nodes straight.

Step 6. Move the top node even with the other one and bump the line up. Check your editing by clicking out of edit mode. If you have a big crease in one or the other leg, try to make the node edit lines as straight up as possible and still have a slight hump like this:

Step 7. When you are finished editing, click on the edit icon again to end the editing session, click Zoom back to 100, and on View, Guides & Grid, Grid to remove the Grid.

Step 8. Open the Material box and click on Border/Depth tab and put a check on Smooth Spline. The Border number should go to 99, and your preview button should give you a nice looking elephant butt. :)

Save

Step 9. R-click on the body and Convert Object Type, From Text/Path to Image.
Click on the Blur tool 'corner' and find the Smudge Tool. Set it on these settings

Start in the white area just above the gray area and move the smudge brush straight down to whiten and smooth the elephant's ankles. Be careful you don't disturb any gray areas on the sides.

Save again with another number at the end of the name.

Step 10. Click on the Blur tool, default settings are fine, and smooth out any line like crinkles that may have appeared from editing. Be careful not to disturb any gray areas in your blending.

Feet

Step 1. Click on the Path tool and choose the rectangle. Draw one 14x6 depending on how thick and wide you want the foot to be. Obviously, it has to cover the whole bottom, so use your judgment. Give it the preset of your choice. Duplicate it and move it to the right leg.

Tail

Step 1. With the Path tool selected, click on the Spline line tool and draw a tail. Keep trying till you get it the way you want it. You might want to Zoom in for this part. Edit it a bit if you're not so hot on the drawing bit. Shorter rather than longer is better for this. When it comes to animating the tail, you don't want a big, honking tail flying around :)))

Step 2. R-click on it and Align, Center Horizontally. Flip it left or right in either direction you want it to go in. If it doesn't have the same preset for the feet give it the same preset. My tail preview above is different than my feet, but don't you do that LOL!

There, that's better :)))

Save that file!

Name

Click on the Text tool and choose a font you like. Thinner fonts work best, but you decide. Type your name, and Center below the tail like the sample at the top of this page. Choose the same preset or a different one, so it stands out, it's up to you.

Save your file - and save it again with another number. After this next step you can no longer edit the original parts!

Coloring

Click on the ears. Use the Hue & Saturation icon (Format, Hue & Saturation) to give her white parts any color of the rainbow to match or contrast her shoes and tail! Make note of your settings while doing the ears. Do all white parts with the same settings.

Decide now if you are going to animate her or not. If you are not going to animate her you are finished! Merge All as a Single Object, and Save her as a psd (usable as a tube) file with the instructions below, if you want, and pick up your award!

If you ARE going to animate go to the link below for 'page 2' - Animating your Tag! You may still save her as a transparent file (tube) below, just Undo the Merged layers. Don't forget your award below! :)

Instructions for Saving your elephant as a transparent psd file (tube)!

In the Layer Manager, click on the 'eye' on the title bar and hide the background. You may have to pull your Manager out sideways with the arrow to see the eye!

Select all parts, and Merge as Single Object if you haven't already. Save her as a .psd file, and you have your own elephant tube!

How to animate her tail and stomp is on page 2.
