BUD
1. New Image, white, 200 W. X 400 H.
2. Line & Arrow tool, Spline, 3D Round, any color. Draw a circular spiral ending with the end of the line touching the line next to it like so below.
Edit it till you get it semi roundish and fairly smooth. (This image is zoomed at 200)
Every rose is different, and you'll be filling in the spaces, so don't worry too much as long as it's ovalish, and the lines are not touching each other. Use the Transform tool, Resize - unlocked - to make it narrower like this.
3. Open the Material box above. On the color tab choose Gradient and click on the gradient color to open the Gradient selection box.
Choose Multiple colors, and click again on the Gradient color. Scroll down a bit till you see number 008, the golden gradient, and choose that one to use.
4. Selection tools, Magic Wand, click inside these lines so all of the space has been selected.
Now ZOOM in wayyy up so you can select every last white square at the end of the line. Every bit of this must be selected.
Rclick, Expand by 1, Circle, Keep original soft edge is checked, ok.
Click on Edit, Trace Edges, Selection Marquee, and accept the default settings.
Change the Horizontal Deform to 3D Round.
5. Open the Material box and use these settings:
Color: 008 gold gradient
Bevel: 3D
Bevel Settings: 99 and -15, smooth spine IS checked
Shadow: None
Light: 1 Ambient: 66
Shading: Phong
Bump: Reflection 004 (set by gold gradient)
Reflection: RE004 again
No Transparency or Border. Continued...
6. Put your mouse on the light spot on the preview window to the right and move the light source to the preview below.
7. Use your Layer manage to drag and drop this filled layer under your lines.
8. Path tool, 3D Round, Spline, draw a V type shape for the bottom of the bud like so. Give it a U shape bottom, not pointed...
9. Path, Edit this shape so it looks similar to this shape below. Use Free and Non Free Edit to create your bud shape. Click in and out of Edit until you get your bud body the way you want it.
10. Go back into Path Edit and add a node to one side or the other near the top of your rosebud. Dip it in just a bit to add a bit of distinction to it like so.
11. If the bottom is a bit too roundish use the Transform, Perspective tool to bring the bottom to a bit more of a V shape, but not pointed.
12. Don't forget to Save as you go.
Deselect all objects.
STEM
1. Path tool, Spline. Open the Material box, Gradient, and choose number 020 green for your leaves and stem.
Again, move the light source so that it is approximately where you put it for your rosebud.
2. Zoom up so you can trace around the edges of your bud.
Your light source is coming from the left, from the top downward, so the long side needs to be on the left. You will be Editing this, so it's up to you how careful you want to be here. LOL.
Now Edit the line so it's smooth. Make it so the edge of the bud is in between your two lines.
Give the long side a bit of a bulb at the end like a leaf might be starting there like shown below. Just add a node, and make it a bit round at the tip, nothing fancy. Just make the end bigger. Remember every flower is different!
3. Now go back into Edit mode and take the bottom two nodes and bring them to the bottom of your image background for the stem.
4. You can go back into Edit one more time and pick up one node at the base of the bud and bring it up like a pointed cover like you see on other flowers. Use Free Edit to pull this node up to form a point. Play around with the short side and curl that one too while your add it. It will only make it look more realistic in the end.
SHADOWS
1. Give your stem a Shadow. To the bottom right if your light source is from the left like above - 2-2-50-100-2. Use your judgement if you have a different light source and follow the same line with your shadow.
Rclick, Split Shadow.
2. Click on your eraser, 20-0-1 for your settings, and click on the stem shadow object.
Erase all that you see that is not on the rosebud. Any part that lays against the white image background erase.
3. Click on your Spiral line you made first, and add a shadow to this with these settings - to the bottom right 1-1-50-100-3.
Split shadow, click on the shadow object, and erase what touches the white background. Be careful not to take any off the gold.
LEAVES
1. Deselect all objects.
Go to your Custom Shapes and find a leaf you like.
2. Draw a few of these going up the stem making them progressivly smaller till you get half way to the top of the bud. Alternate sides, and use the rotate tool to change the direction they are going in a bit.
4. Rclick, Select all, Group. Save this as your rosebud template.
Select all, Merge as one object. Hide the background, and Save it as a .psd tube for your collection.
Duplicate. Close your original. To change the look of your rose use your Transform, Perspective tool and other tools to make the other roses look a little differently shaped.
