Small flake
1. New Image, black, set up like below. Save as glass snowflake_name.ufo.
2. Path tool, 3D Round, Rhumbus (see below - for other versions you may use a narrow diamond).
3. In the Material Attrubutes Gallery in your EP click on the Glass section and choose your lightest glass preset or in V.10 it's G23. Click on it to activate it once or twice. You can also make colored flakes by clicking on any glass preset, so feel free to experiment here.
4. Create a small rhumbus or narrow diamond 13 x 50 px. vertically. Rclick, Align, Center Both.
Duplicate, and move it above your first shape just touching the tips together.
Duplicate this again, and move it above the last shape just touching the tips together like before.
Rclick, Select All, Group.
Rclick, Align, Center Both.
5. Click on the Transform tool, Rotate Freely and set the degrees for 30.
Set the Rotate Center to Center
And set the Copy Rotate to CounterClockwise.
Now click on the Copy Rotate 5 times till you get back to the first one. Do NOT duplicate the first set of triangles. You'll know if you do, and you can just hit the good old Undo button to fix that little oops. :)
6. Rclick, Select All, Group.
Duplicate this shape.
With the Adjust, Resize tool (other versions Edit, Resize) use the settings below to make your duplicate a smaller object.
7. Rclick, Align, Center Both.
With your Transform tool, Rotate Freely, Rotate by Degree enter 15 for your degrees and click on one of the circle arrows to rotate this piece left or right once.
8. Do exactly as written here as your large snowflake is based on this ufo file.
Rclick, Select All, Group.
With your object selected click on the Crop tool and click on the check mark on the top right above. You should now have a nicely cropped image like mine below.
9. Hide the background with the eye in the Layer Manager. Save once more as a ufo, and then Save as a transparent png. If you hide the background, the transparent setting in the save window for the png file will be automatically selected.
You're finished with your small glass snowflake, and it's a tube! Congratulations - wasn't that easy! :) Now for the big one! :)
Leave your file open on your workspace. Click undo to unhide the background, and again to undo the croping and again to ungroup the layers.
Delete the top set of smaller grouped objects.
Large Glass Snowflake
1. Save as lg-glass-snowflake_name.ufo.
Hide your snowflake object with the eye in the Layer Manager.
With the same settings you already have for the Path tool and shape, create a diamond or rhumbus 13x61 px.
Duplicate this piece 3 times for a total of 4 pieces, and move each one above the other like you did before.
Hold the Control key down, and click on each of the 3 other diamonds shapes in your Layer manager to select all 4 pieces. Rclick over the selected objects, and Group.
Rclick, Align, Center Both.
2. Transform tool, Rotate Freely, Rotate by Degree, this should be already set for 15, so click the right-circled arrow once.
3. Turn on your view with the eye for your first snowflake so you can watch it fill in around it. It's fun! :)
Transform tool, Rotate Freely, Rotate by Degree, change to 30, and click on the Copy Rotate button filling in the spaces between your first snowflake till all your spaces are filled. Look at that! It's sooo pretty! :)
Hold the Control key down, and in the Layer Manager click on the shapes you just created (except for the first snowflake) and Rclick, Group. Save.
4. You can slide this piece you just make off your other flake below and it can be a glass snowflake on its own. Save it as a ufo.
Now you can embellish your glass snowflake with sparkles.
And on your main glass file with both snowflakes on it you can hit Undo and bring back the large flake and add sparkles to that too. :)
The largest snowflake above in my display above has 4 sets of layer objects.
